We transform "regular folks" into welders, woodworkers, welders, jewelry makers, leather crafters, knife forgers, and stained glass artisans in just one workshop. Our hands-on workshops are taught by local makers, artists & designers in Brooklyn.
Locally owned and operated since 2015, Craftsman Ave is a destination to connect people who want to learn how to do new things with a skilled and likable craftsman who can show them how to do those things in a straight forward, fun, and non-condescending manner. You can make cool stuff while supporting the makers and artists of NYC who we hire to lead our workshops.

The hands on demonstration and friendly staff helped make me feel like a blacksmith. They made the entire experience memorable!. I would highly recommend to friends to try this!

Teacher's response

Thank you for your review! We are happy to know you had a great time during the workshop and hope you get a lot of use out of your knife.

The Teacher is Great!
She is creative, opened and very sportive.
The materials were provided, we made cooper lamp.

Teacher's response

Thank you so much for your kind words! We are so happy you had a great time and hope you enjoy your lamp for years to come.

We came for a coupled date night and enjoyed the class very much. My husband loves Forge ih Fire and this class has all the knife making steps he saw on the show. It's suitable for someone like me that is not crafty at all!

Sarah Perillo Feb 2024

Informative and lots of fun! We could bring our own design ideas or use some pre-made ones from the books they had available.

The work that goes into making a bag…whew. I went solo and there was one other person there who was also solo but mostly couples present. You’ll be busy making your bag so convo is the last concern. The teachers were great, plenty of help on hand and they routinely walked around for anyone moving on to the next steps. Great color selection, I made a pink bag with tan/brownish straps. Hammering, sanding and sewing involved so unless you have some experience with that, you will there for the full time so take your time and make a quality bag. 10/10 would recommend

Teacher's response

Happy to hear you enjoyed the workshop, Tica! It was a pleasure having you here at Craftsman Ave and we hope to see you again sometime soon!

This was a great class - easy to get started (and started on time), tools were available and examples provided, clear instructions, opportunities to experiemntand most importantly, I left with a great looking copper lamp!

This class was a blast wow we really did it ! Our teacher Gerard was helpful and informative with his instructions, but gave us space to create.
A fun couples experience

This class was incredible! I bought the class as a surprise gift for my partner and we each made one knife each. Our instructor Arlene was so helpful, funny, inspiring, and had a great taste in music. The effort was somehow both easier and harder than expected (my arms are spaghetti), but the teacher was available to help if you were struggling. To be able to leave with a handmade knife was amazing! It inspired me to try other classes there, and I couldn't recommend it enough!

We had a great time in our class, it was a perfect birthday present for my boyfriend. He felt like he was on the show Forged in Fire and had a great time. It was a great beginner class, we could do things ourselves but always had our teacher right there to answer any questions or guide us in the right direction. We’ve already talked about doing a next level class!

You guys rock! Thanks for a great evening. I loved learning how to make a knife with your graceful patience.

Both instructors were incredible. The attention to detail and the support they gave the class the whole time made this class hands down one of my favorite. Just go in being ready to sweat, hydrate, and sweat some more.

This is a GREAT time.
I was given this class as a Christmas present and it's one of the best gifts I've ever gotten. The class size is small. My teacher was Gerard, and he was warm, nurturing, enthusiastic, encouraging, skilled, and patient.
This is a no-nonsense class where you really learn by doing. There's a quick hello and then you're geared up and pounding on molten pieces of rebar like you're a Viking blacksmith forging a sword. After hammering, shaping, quenching, grinding, and weaving, four hours later you leave the workshop with a knife that YOU made.
The vibe is fun. Nice rock n' roll is played while you hammer and grind away.
It's great. Highly recommend.

The teacher at Craftsman Ave was very patient and knowledgeable, and he was very clear on making sure that everyone understood the steps so that everyone would be able to leave with a finished product. The venue was very nice, very organized, and they made sure we had everything we needed. It was definitely worthwhile experience and I felt that I had learned a lot about copper pipe fabrication in a very easy, hands-on way, and totally worth the price. I honestly enjoyed the whole process (especially the torch :)) as I come from a diy background and that to me each step was very fun. 5 Stars!

One of the coolest and most unique experiences I’ve had! Instruction was absolutely impeccable and everything was really easy and explained well from beginning to end. We love our stained glass piece and are looking forward to future classes with Craftsman Ave!

Would be really helpful to see videos of the process before the class. It would help with deign selection.

Pushpa Bhat Jan 2023

Went in to the class with no wood working experience; left the class feeling like I could use various tools to make something. If you are looking to work with your hands/create something/just get away from a screen, would recommend this workshop (or others at Craftsman Ave). The teacher was great---supportive and there to help but also gave space for us to do work on our own.

Arlene was great! Very knowledgeable and helpful. It’s lovely to have full creative freedom when it comes to materials. The only negative to this experience was the bathroom. First, the studio should have a bathroom. If the location does not allow, Craftsman needs to find a new place because the current bathroom in the next building over is a dump.

Matthew Bolish Dec 2022

The class was amazing and the teacher made the whole thing fun and very informative.

Kasey Bandilla Nov 2022

This class was amazing. The teachers were super helpful and were walking around the whole time to ensure that everyone knew what they were doing. They gave tutorials each step of the way that were clear and helpful. All materials were provided. Three hours seems like a long time, but once you start the project, you realize why you need that much time. The space was cozy and cute. We sat at a table with 4 other people, but there are also individual tables perfect for dates. We had a great time chatting and jamming out as everyone worked on their lamps. The staff are also very accommodating. Our lamps weren’t finish drying, so they allowed us to keep them there until we were able to pick them up. I would highly recommend. Definitely looking into taking more classes from them in the future!

This class is so worth it. Will and Massimo were great instructors and extremely patient and kind. The variety colors and straps make it so you truly feel like your bag is one of a kind. I loved being able to craft with my mom and learn a new skill. The space is cozy and welcoming and overall an amazing atmosphere and class. Thank you
