Custom Copper Lamp Class

Learn the fundamentals of soldering and build a one-of-a-kind copper pipe lamp!

3 hours Class size 1 to 15 (public classes), 5 to 10 label $185

If you love great design and a great DIY project, this class in NYC gives you a hands-on experience to make something beautiful.

Our three hour Copper Lamp workshop gives you the tools, materials, and inspiration to craft an actual working lamp and light up your life with a funky awesome Edison bulb. If you want visitors to your home to know you made this lamp with your own two hands, you are going to have to find a way to work it into conversation organically, because it isn’t self evident.

This is your new identity. You are the cool friend that makes their own lamps!
Many in the Craftsman Ave community consider the Copper Lamp workshop to be the “gateway” into maker life. Be warned: You are likely to catch the maker fever, and the only cure is more workshops!

Crafting a Copper Lamp is a delicious taste of dopamine rush from creating with fire.
Yes! Not only will you play with shiny copper pipes and manipulate them into the design of your choice (this is where a childhood spent among building sets will pay dividends), you will also control the power of fire as you solder together the copper joints of your creation.

Tools and techniques: You’ll use some simple hand tools to cut copper pipe. We’ll then teach you the art of soldering, using a propane torch to connect the pieces of your lamp.

Knowledge required
This is a “beginner” level workshop, meaning that no knowledge of copper pipe fitting and soldering is required, but the sky's the limit for your creative design!
What you'll get
You'll get all the materials and use of tools to create your custom lamp.
What to bring
Wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you can work in.

It’s our business to bring people together to make things and use tools that most New Yorker’s couldn’t and wouldn’t use in their homes. This is really difficult to do via Zoom. Gathering people in our post-COVID world requires that we take our guests’ safety even more seriously by implementing every possible precaution. To ensure your safety while at a at Craftsman Ave workshop, we’ve implemented the following precautions:

Small Class Sizes – We’ve always specialized in offering hands-on workshops for small groups of people. In the past, we limited our workshops to 8 guests. For the foreseeable future, we’ll be further limiting our workshops to 4-5 people max so everyone can be safely distanced from each other.

Last-Minute Rescheduling – If a guest doesn’t feel well on the day of their workshop, they can reschedule to a later date at no cost.

Studio Cleaning – With all the wood and metal dust kicked-up in our workshops, there are some areas of our studio that will always appear a little short of “clean”. However, you can be sure that we disinfect all tools and surfaces regularly and especially before each workshop begins.

Mask-Up! – Everyone – guests and instructors – must wear a mask, at least upon entering our studio. BYOM or we’ll be happy to provide you with one. After you arrive, we'll talk about everyone's vaccination status. Masks will only be removed if everyone present is vaccinated AND comfortable with proceeding without masks - otherwise we'll remain masked throughout the workshop. We will also have plenty of gloves available.

Hand Washing/Sanitizing – You’ll find plenty of hand sanitizer dispensers throughout our space and everyone will be asked to clean their hands before each workshop.

Upgraded Ventilation – We’ve upgraded the air handling systems in our studio, effectively doubling the airflow through our space. If any icky things make it into the studio air, they’ll be quickly whisked out by our exhaust system.

Arlene was great! Very knowledgeable and helpful. It’s lovely to have full creative freedom when it comes to materials. The only negative to this experience was the bathroom. First, the studio should have a bathroom. If the location does not allow, Craftsman needs to find a new place because the current bathroom in the next building over is a dump.

This class was amazing. The teachers were super helpful and were walking around the whole time to ensure that everyone knew what they were doing. They gave tutorials each step of the way that were clear and helpful. All materials were provided. Three hours seems like a long time, but once you start the project, you realize why you need that much time. The space was cozy and cute. We sat at a table with 4 other people, but there are also individual tables perfect for dates. We had a great time chatting and jamming out as everyone worked on their lamps. The staff are also very accommodating. Our lamps weren’t finish drying, so they allowed us to keep them there until we were able to pick them up. I would highly recommend. Definitely looking into taking more classes from them in the future!
