What you'll do
A warm bowl of noodle soup is the perfect antidote to cold days and in this cooking class, you'll learn how to make delicious Japanese ramen from scratch.
Our fresh ramen workshop is the perfect place to learn how to make your favorite ramen soup. Chef Malik will guide you through each step of the process, from creating a delicious broth and making your own noodles, to adding the perfect toppings.
Menu
- Mushroom white miso (vegetarian) - Shitake, oyster and enoki mushrooms, tofu, baby spinach, egg
- Authentic tonkotsu ramen - Chashu pork belly and pork loin and a silky, creamy, rich tonkotsu pork broth, radishes, green onions, egg
Whether you're a vegetarian or a fan of authentic tonkotsu ramen, our class is perfect for you. Chef Malik will demonstrate the steps and guide you as you create your meal in a fun setting.
At the end of your time, you'll share a delicious meal with new friends and take the skills you've learned to your home kitchen.
Please note
- All in-person classes will be limited to 10 students.
- Masks must be worn at all times, except while eating at the table.
- Proof of vaccination will be required and reviewed by the chef prior to entry into the kitchen.
- COVID protocols are subject to change to reflect local and state mandates.
- Teens under 18-years-old will be required to have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
- A snack will be served at the beginning of class and you will eat the dishes you make at the end of class. Unfortunately, our zoning permit does not allow students to take food home.
- If you think you might be allergic to anything on the menu, please get in touch prior to your class.

All of the ingredients and use of kitchen tools to make your recipes.
What to bring
- Close-toed shoes are mandatory. High heels, open-toed shoes, sandals, flip flops are not allowed in the kitchen.
- Shoulder-length hair or longer needs to be worn back and away from your face; we have plenty of hair ties in the kitchen for you to use and keep.
- Feel free to bring a favorite apron or a knife you want to practice with but know that we will supply aprons and all the tools you need for use during class.

Chef Malik Francis
Before falling in love with life as a chef, Malik Francis completed his PhD studies in Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley. His background as a scientist, as well as working in professional kitchens, has shaped his culinary philosophy and style. Since 2016, he has hosted a pop-up dinner called Materials + Methods: where he explores his love of music, science, and storytelling.
One of his primary missions as a chef is to demystify the essential elements of good cooking and share his scientific knowledge in an easily digestible fashion. This is exemplified in his food writing publications. Malik is excited to share his enthusiasm and knowledge with you.

Kitchen on Fire offers hands-on cooking experiences in Berkeley and Oakland. Since 2005, Chef Olive and professional chef instructors have been sharing their knowledge and love for cooking through public classes, team-building and corporate wellness events. Lisa Miller teaches classes with a nutrition focus, promoting healthy living through meals made with high-quality ingredients and traditional cooking methods.
With a deep passion for sharing delicious food and life-long dedication to healthy living, co-owners Olivier Said and Lisa Miller can be found in the kitchen or working with students or clients in some capacity every day of the week.
