Hello! I’m Hannah Lamar, and I am a self-taught master embroidery artist specializing in custom pet portraits. I split time between Queens and West Shokan, NY with my husband, our two kids, and our dogs Steve and Bongo. I grew up on a small farm in East Tennessee surrounded by my dad's hunting dogs and countless other critters. I first learned embroidery from my mother, my grandmother, and at the Appalachian Arts Center in Clinton TN. I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a BFA in mixed media. I also have a master’s degree in Occupational therapy, which emphasizes the importance of doing meaningful activities for our health and well being. I believe that, in an increasingly virtual world, making things with our hands is so important.
After my first son was born, I embroidered a portrait of our then only dog Steve on a denim jacket. I wanted to make something for myself, and it was one of the most
meditative, empowering, and therapeutic
experiences I have ever had. I was hooked, and spent the next seven years becoming a master at embroidering pet portraits. I use a single strand of thread to capture the movement and texture of fur like no other medium can. Embroidery projects force us to slow down, be patient, and fall in love with the process. Embroidering a beloved pet, especially if they have passed, is a beautiful way to spend time with them and feel close to their memory. I absolutely love embroidery, and I am so happy to share this love with you!
