Even complete beginners will feel confident replicating recipes at home.

Meet LALA!

In 2014, I needed to do something new. As a child, my Scottish grandmother had taught me to make jam, and I'd continued making jams for friends and family as an adult. "Why not start a little jam business?" I thought. Why not, indeed. The State of California had started a new program - Cottage Food Operators - where certain foods could be prepared in home kitchens and sold to the general public. Mountains of paperwork later, I set up a card table in my front yard and sold my jams to neighbors passing by. In 2015, I expanded into my garage. Another year went by with many mistakes and bumps as I began the wholesale road. Business improved and my husband and I bought a 1930's cottage and remodeled it into a commercial kitchen and retail store.

A wonderful afternoon spent with Lala. When we arrived, everything was prepped, so that we could start jam making right away. She was great to talk with during the jam making process & very knowledgeable.

Left the class feeling confident to try it out on our own, 1 jar of jam, a tub of strawberry foam (leftover discard from jam process), apron, and the recipe.

We especially enjoyed the zero waste approach and minimal ingredients.

This class was terrific fun! Leslie's (Lala) kitchen was quite big and roomy for the three of us (my daughter and I and Leslie). She couldn't make it any easier to learn how to make jam - fruit was prepped, and all of the utensils and glassware we would need were ready to go. Leslie is really good at explaining what to do, and letting you do it, but being there as a friendly "safety net" in case anything goes astray. And the strawberry jam we made was delicious! Highly recommended.

this was so much fun and so informative! Lala just gives and gives of her time and knowledge and products. We made the best jam ever, learned how to adapt the recipe to make others, learned the why's of what to do and what not to do. the venue was her beautiful kitchen which was immaculate and it was just a wonderful morning.

Our jam master-educator was pleasant to be around and very thorough in teaching her craft. She allowed us, the students, to demo her detailed jam making process. The class size of pupils was small and the kitchen was a legit commercial kitchen, which was sparkling clean. Supplies and equipment were set up in advance, like an assembly line, so not too much time wasted. You’ll just have to see and taste for yourself. We left with a recipe, an apron, and a strawberry jam which will have a 2 year shelf life.
