Is there anything more inviting than the smell of bread baking in the oven? In this Berkeley baking class, you'll learn how to make Italian artisan bread from scratch.

Master Baker Michael Kalanty shares more professional tips and techniques, so you can bake deliciously crusty breads at home.

Whether you're a complete beginner or have some experience, this engaging baking class is a solid step forward in building your basic skills. Learn to incorporate Poolish and Biga pre-ferments into your doughs to give more flavor, better chew, and longer shelf life!

Chef Michael will demonstrate and you will follow along with his expert guidance. He'll share his tips and tricks so you can learn how to make bread in just the hours you spend in class. Students 21+ are welcome to bring beer or wine to enjoy while you bake.

When class is over, you'll sample your work and take home the skills to create amazing loaves from your own oven.

Please note

  • All in-person classes will be limited to 10 students.
  • Masks must be worn at all times, except while eating at the table.
  • Proof of vaccination will be required and reviewed by the chef prior to entry into the kitchen.
  • COVID protocols are subject to change to reflect local and state mandates.
  • Teens under 18 will be required to have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
  • A snack will be served at the beginning of class and you will eat the dishes you make at the end of class. Unfortunately, our zoning permit does not allow students to take food home.
  • If you think you might be allergic to anything on the menu, please get in touch prior to your class.

What to bring
  • Close-toed shoes are mandatory. High heels, open-toed shoes, sandals, flip flops are not allowed in the kitchen.
  • Shoulder-length hair or longer needs to be worn back and away from your face; we have plenty of hair ties in the kitchen for you to use and keep.
Suitable for

This class is great for individuals and couples as well as for a team building activity, birthday, bachelorette party or bachelor party.

Suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 15 years old). Adult accompaniment is not required.

With more than 20 years of baking and cooking experience, Michael Kalanty is a master in all things bread and has won several awards for his writing and teaching. His certifications include Executive Pastry Chef, Culinary Educator, and Master Taster. Kalanty was also named Chef Instructor of the Year by Le Cordon Bleu and has several full-length baking courses online, produced in partnership with Craftsy.com. His first book, How to Bake Bread, won "Best Bread Book in the World" at the Paris Cookbook Fair in 2011.
