What you'll do
Make waves in your art with hot wax! Learn how to paint with an encaustic medium in this hands-on and engaging painting for beginners class in Walnut Creek.
You'll be guided through this unique and interesting way of making art by a friendly and local artist, Melissa. She will show you how to create texture, three-dimensional effects, and layers of brilliant colors to create a masterpiece that mimics the sea. Even if you've never heard of encaustic painting before, you can still join in and come away with new skills and stunning artwork.
During this painting with a twist class, you will discover the history of encaustic art and all the best tips and tricks for experimenting with hot wax. Unwind as you recreate the splash marks, rolling waves, and glorious seafoam.
If you and your creative friends are looking for new art activities, or you're just wondering what to do in the Bay Area, Melissa can help! Visit her studio, or she can come to you and put on events for birthday parties, team-building events, and more!
Please note:
These art classes are customizable for how long you want to be in the studio getting creative. We offer four to eight hours sessions, but every class comes with all art supplies, tools, and guidance from your teacher. Longer classes can take place over two days or in one day with a 45-minute lunch break.

Your teacher
Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, I received my BA from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and continue my arts education though workshops and specialized instruction. Currently living in Walnut Creek, CA, I am an encaustic painting instructor, working artist and advocate for the arts. In 2020, I co-developed a virtual gallery and developed a YouTube channel called The Encaustic Edge. I also started a business coaching artists, at all levels in their careers. I serve on several art boards, volunteer at galleries in the San Francisco Bay area, and host live and virtual encaustic demonstrations.
Encaustic is an ancient artform that originates with the Greeks and Egyptians. Layers of molten beeswax and a blow torch are my idea of a good time!
Through the years, I have discovered how fulfilling it is to teach the art I love to make. It is my pleasure to feed people’s creative appetites, give them new knowledge and share ideas. My artwork has been exhibited in Turkey, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, Washington, New York, and California, and I have collectors around the globe.
