Have you ever wanted to know how to sew? In this virtual experience, you will cover all sorts of sewing basics that act as the first stepping stone on your sewing journey.

Join your friendly and experienced teacher, Julie Ann, as she gently leads you through a step-by-step guide on how to start sewing. There are plenty of demonstrations, as well as time to ask questions and get personal feedback.

In this online sewing class you will learn:

  • How to choose the right needle
  • How to thread the needle and make a knot
  • Using a thimble
  • Running stitch
  • Backstitch
  • Catch stitch
  • Blanket stitch
  • How to make a finishing knot
  • How to sew a button

You'll end this virtual sewing session with all sorts of new tips and tricks up your sleeve. We will also send you some hand-outs to remind you of everything you learned and to inspire you to pick up even more beginner sewing projects.

Suitable for

This Live streaming class is great for individuals and couples as well as for virtual team building activities at home.

This is a fun indoor activity, suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 10 years old). Adult accompaniment is not required.

At THE SEWING ROOM we specialize in Apparel Sewing and Fashion. Our instructors have experience with garment fit, construction, design in both the fashion industry as well costuming. We love to share our expertise with our students and believe that sewing is SUPER FUN! And it’s also a great skill that may save you money, challenge your brain and give you a terrific wardrobe.

Jennifer Serr is Owner and Lead Instructor at The Sewing Room. An Alameda mom with over 20 years in the fashion industry. Jennifer is also Owner and Lead Designer at Bonjour Teaspoon Patterns - A sewing pattern company specializing in "Classic Style for the Modern Girl & Her Doll".

Julie Ann Brown has been teaching Fashion Illustration and Design at The Sewing Room in Alameda since 2019. Since earning her BFA in Fashion Design at Otis, she worked in Southern California for two decades designing swimwear for labels such as Girlstar, bebe, Lucky Brand, Betsey Johnson, ále by Alessandra Ambrosio, Soluna and Isabella Rose. Her designs have been featured in Vogue, GQ, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, and Sports Illustrated.

Christine Knobel is a fashion designer and professional Fashion Instructor. She's worked professionally in pattern drafting, loungewear design, textile print design, and with private clients for cosplay design and construction. Her cosplay work has been featured by Marvel Comics, and seen on such sites as Vanity Fair, LA Weekly, and the Daily Mail UK. Christine has a passion for fashion, from fiber, yarns, textiles, to the rich history of the garments we wear.
