Learn how to use nature and household kitchen items to create art in this workshop in Bakersfield! Through this creative workshop, you will learn natural dyeing and enjoy a rejuvenating hands-on lesson.

Please join us at a natural healing community art workshop led by Community Artist and Educator Jaee Sumter, founder of Sweet Herbal Honey Apothecary and Ase’ O Community Arts Education Program.

Sweet Community Care is a hands-on collaborative nature art workshop that introduces the community to everyday creative practices that promote holistic healing, self-expression, skill building, storytelling, and connection with the Earth.

During our workshop, we will learn how to use nature for making, exploration, and community bonding. We will explore fun approaches to dyeing fabric, painting magical creations, drawing with our senses, and creating take-home creative-based projects.

In our Sweet Community Care we will learn:

  • How to use everyday herbs, roots, fruits, and vegetables for art
  • How to make your own DIY sketchbook from scratch
  • The history of dyeing around the world
  • How to paint and dye fabrics using natural and non-natural dyes
  • Color Theory through the lens of Natural Dyeing
  • How to work as a team through a class natural dyed mural

Please Note
  • Teacher is mobile only and there will be a travel/service fee, which will be assessed and added to the booking after the initial payment is received. 
  • Teacher is willing to travel within Northern and Southern California. Teacher also teaches online and their location in Bakersfield, CA.

This class is great for individuals and couples as well as for a team building activity, birthday or bachelorette party.

Suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 8 years old).

Adult accompaniment is not required.

Sweet Herbal Honey

I am Janae' Sumter, but everyone calls me Jaee. I am a community artist, arts integration educator, coach, self-taught herbalist, and curator based in Bakersfield, California. I have a rich background and practice in cultural arts and holistic wellness practices. I teach and lead youth and adult workshops that create a natural learning environment that is explorative, fun, and reflective.

I am also the founder of Sweet Herbal Honey Apothecary, a community creative agency that produces creative-based community events, services, and workshops. Under this business, we sell herbal and home decor, hold events at our home apothecary in Bakersfield, and lead arts wellness classes through our community arts and wellness education program.

Through Sweet Herbal Honey, I travel to you to work with your community and hold workshop sessions at our home apothecary for individuals and groups. I teach sessions that connect people with themselves, the earth, and others. These sessions are for beginners and can be as parties, youth and adult groups, and school groups. Offered sessions include Natural Dyeing, Movement/Dance, Nutmilk making, Book Making, Painting and Music, Painting flowerpots, Creative Herbalism, and more.

About your facilitator:

I am a New Orleans native who obtained their Bachelor of Arts from Spelman College in Studio Art and Master of Art in Integrated Practices focusing on Community Art & Social Justice from Pratt Institute.

I am a nonbinary educator and practitioner who has a wide practice in the realms of Visual and Creative, Arts Integration Education, Event Planning and more... I have obtained their Bachelor of Arts from Spelman College in Studio Art and Master of Art in Integrated Practices focusing on Community Art & Social Justice from Pratt Institute. I have 5 years experience of teaching in many traditional and nontraditional educational environments; within the U.S. and abroad.

I love learning just as much as I love teaching and due to this, each class is explorative and brings out the curiosity in both youth and adults.
