3.5 hours Class size 1 to 7     label $120

Have you bought a new DSLR, medium format, or bridge camera and want to know the best camera settings for beginners to use? This New York photography class is a brilliant way to get familiar with your camera's capabilities and decipher all the technical jargon.

After meeting at one of the big apple's photographic hotspots, you'll be shown by a professional photographer how to set up your camera to ensure you get the most out of any impromptu photo opportunities, bring out everyone's best side at events or make those self-portraits really shine.

During the class, you'll learn to:

  • Use the right image format, between JPEG and RAW.
  • Evaluate file sizes and format your memory card.
  • Set a white balance.
  • Correct an exhibition.
  • Set the ISOs.
  • Read the histogram of a photo.
  • Use the P mode of shooting.

The simple, hands-on presentation will help you master your camera's settings so you can concentrate on the good stuff — taking some amazing photos!

You'll also have a debriefing session at the end of the class, where you can share your work with your fellow students for even more inspiration, as well as asking your friendly host any questions you may have about your particular camera's settings. Whether you're an aspiring photographer or just want to level up your Instagram feed, it's a brilliant opportunity to take your first foray into the world of photography.

Please note: A meet up form will be sent to participants a few days before the date of each workshop, with the exact location of the meeting and the teacher's contact details.

What you'll get
  • Professional tuition on the best camera settings to use.
What to bring
  • Bring along your digital camera. Accepted formats include DSLR, bridge or hybrid, digital medium format.
  • Please also ensure the camera's battery is fully charged.

The adventure began back in 2008. Two photography enthusiasts met on a forum and wanted to share this awesome creative practice, so they decided to promote photography classes. The project turned into two websites, a magazine with advice and classes with respected and committed photography teachers.

One of the websites grew and became THE PHOTO ACADEMY, with a team of more than 300 teaching photographers, a presence in 60 cities and 20 countries. Today, based out of Paris and Brussels, the two founders – Raphaël and Maxime continue to promote photography and develop THE PHOTO ACADEMY.

Our teaching approach:

Thanks to an array of practical and technical classes, we hope to pass along essential know-how so you can enjoy learning more about digital or film photography. We also offer a range of thematic courses (in the form of classes or workshops) involving some of the oldest types of photography, including historical and alternative techniques.

In our era of image-based communications and with the multifaceted world of photography constantly evolving, we try to represent as many of the trends as possible and want our photographers to reflect that richness and diversity. That's why our team is composed of women and men with different expertise and approaches that reflect the world of photography today.
