What you'll do
If you're curious about pottery making and want a mini-course on the process from beginning to end, then give this NYC ceramics course a go! It's a chance for complete beginners to try their hand at the potter's wheel, with no experience necessary.
In this pottery class, you will be meeting for four consecutive weeks. During the first class, you will learn wheel throwing basics of how to make a basic form on the pottery wheel. Then, your instructor will guide you as you try it yourself. You'll be able to try and try again until you get a piece or two that you like.
In week two, this will be repeated so that you can gain a little more experience and time spent on the wheel actually producing forms. We will cap the number of works to four per person total.
During week three, you will have the opportunity to trim the works from week one by turning them upside down on the potter's wheel. You will also be able to sponge your works to a smooth finish and further refine. Also in this week, you can carve and paint works to change their color.
In the last class, on week four, you will learn glazing which is how you decorate and add color to your pottery by painting on a liquid glass suspension. Various colors and surface textures are available. The works that you create will be ready to be picked up one week after the last class.
This class is great for those who want to experience clay and have their hand in every part of the process from start to finish, allowing the artist to be exposed to all the stages of firing and finishing.
If you're interested in learning a new and relaxing hobby, pottery will allow you to dig your hands into clay, unwind, and create unique handmade ceramic goods!
