What you'll do
The flavors of Burmese cuisine are bold and unique. In this Berkeley cooking class, join Kitchen on Fire for an evening of creating some of the nation's favorite dishes!
This class will begin with a snack and a lecture from your teacher, Chef Sara, about Burmese food and the recipes you'll be making. You will pick up tons of knowledge about different spices and how to use them to balance out flavors. Your group will then break up into smaller teams and start working on the recipes in the class menu.
On the Menu:
- Khowsay: noodles in coconut curry sauce
- Tea Leaf Salad
- Paratha: crispy and soft layered bread
- Burmese Egg Curry with tomatoes, chiles, and turmeric
- Burmese Tea
Throughout class, Chef Sara will be on-hand to help you with any questions you may have as you learn cooking in the small team format. Don't worry if you don't have much cooking experience, as this class is completely beginner-friendly!
At the end of class, you'll sit down and enjoy eating the dishes you made while sharing some conversation with your fellow classmates.
Please Note:
- If you think you might be allergic to anything on the menu, please indicate it on your class registration and if you have a concern, get in touch.
- You are welcome to eat as much as you’d like in class, though unfortunately, our zoning permit does not allow us to have students take food home.
- We whole-heartedly invite class participants (who are 21 and older) to bring any wine or beer they would like to enjoy during class for personal consumption.

Thorough instruction and a sit-down meal of the recipes made during class.
What to bring
- Close toed shoes are mandatory. High heels, open toed shoes, sandals, flip flops are not allowed in the kitchen.
- Shoulder-length hair or longer needs to be worn back and away from your face; we have plenty of hair ties in the kitchen for you to use and keep.
- Feel free to bring a favorite apron or a knife you want to practice with but know that we will supply aprons and all the tools you need for use during class.
- Wine or beer to enjoy (participants 21 and over).
