Selfup offers a huge variety of cooking classes in NYC. All of these classes are headed by a chef or chefs who excel in their particular area of expertise. Instead of teaching yourself at home, you can elect to engage in a Selfup class, where you can learn in an intimate environment where you can personally interact with the chef.

Our instructor was so personable and clearly a skilled chef and instructor! Our team (local dental office of 25 people) had a great time bonding over cheese-pulling, pizza-baking, and wine-imbibing! We look forward to trying another cooking class with our team soon!

Chef Y was nice and charismatic, but this class was best suited for a casual date night. I think you could only learn something if you were an absolute beginner. It's a class to have fun, not to learn. I signed up because I wanted to learn something new, so I was a little disappointed.

The recipes we made did not match what was listed in the description - we were supposed to make dim sum dumplings, potstickers, and jiaozi dumplings. In actuality, we spent like 10 minutes making spring rolls and the rest of the time making simple potstickers. All we got to do was use premade filling to make potstickers, then the chef cooked everything for us. I wish I had gotten to learn how to make fillings or how to fry/steam the dumplings myself.

The rescheduling policy was also annoying. My partner woke up with food poisoning, so I called and tried to reschedule. The woman told me I could not reschedule over the phone, only by email - weird. Then by email they said it was not possible to reschedule so short notice. I understand it's their right to enforce whatever policy they want, but based on the actual structure of the class it really didn't seem like we needed to be there - we didn't have an individual station that had ingredients specially allocated for us or anything like that, so it was irritating that they were so inflexible.

In summary, although I liked the Chef, I would not attend another class with this group because I don't like the structure of the event, the assumed skill level does not match mine, and I was annoyed by the inflexible policies.

This class was a gift from my daughter. Our teacher was engaging, informative, knowledgeable and entertaining (funny)! The professional kitchen was clean, spacious, and well-equipped. We (a class of 16) had plenty of room to observe, participate in demonstrations, and do the work of the class - making dumplings! We learned how to roll a spring roll with rice wrappers, how to make dumpling dough, and four ways to roll and shape dumplings. Our teacher's demonstrations were detail-oriented but not overly complicated. Our creations were steamed and fried by our teacher; we had a delicious feast at the end of the class! I had a lot of fun and will definitely do another!

This was extremely fun! The food was so delicious and it was very hands on. We made dough from scratch, vietnamese spring rolls, dim sum and learned to fold different dumpling styles. There was crackers, spring rolls, wine, and other drinks available to have before and during the class.
The chef was great and very helpful! Chef Danny and Alex are a good time and made everything an easy, smooth experience.

This class wasn’t quite what we were expecting. I expected to walk in and every group have their own cooking station. I thought we would have ingredients, stovetops, knives, etc at each station. Rather everyone was mixing and putting their hands in a communal bowl which I found rather unhygienic. Although everyone was wearing gloves I often noticed people scratching their faces or touching their phones and then touching the food again. I also was under the impression that we would be eating the food we individually prepared but it all got mixed together so the ravioli you prepared would be just going into one big pot along with everyone else’s. The instructor was nice and very helpful with great energy but I just was not expecting the layout of the class to be like this. Also this class was less cooking and more assembling ingredients. The chicken is precooked when you get there. The other instructors cook the pasta. The only thing we really did was mix flour and eggs and use the pasta making machine. Overall I believe this experience is too overpriced. If you are expecting an actual cooking class this is not it.

Chef Ygael was great - he was funny and informative at the same time. This is definitely more of a basic level class, but what was nice is that it took the pressure off of anyone who wasn't comfortable in the kitchen. Chef Ygael demonstrated everything first and then we would practice the techniques. The dumplings and rolls were delicious!

Chef Danny was very engaging, funny, and gave clear directions. The venue was spacious and they had wine/hors d'oeuvres to enjoy before the class began. During the class, we prepared most of the food to be cooked, although their were some items that were prepared and we did not actually get the chance to cook the pasta ourselves. Despite this, we really enjoyed our time and it was a great bonding opportunity! I would recommend this class.

Overall the experience was good. The space was clean and had good ambiance. The provided drinks/snacks were also a big plus. I was slightly surprised to know that we weren't physically cooking anything, rather just preparing the ingredients to be cooked but it makes sense. I think if the course was more transparent about this it would've been a better experience.
