2 x 3 hours 1 to 10 (public classes), 4 to 12 $135
Discover the joy of creating your own hand-built ceramic mug in this engaging pottery course in Portland!
In this two week course, you will learn the basics of slab building ceramics, a pottery technique that does not require a wheel, just your two hands!
Week one: The workshop will begin with a slab building demo, including making stencils, and how to attach two pieces of clay. Pre-rolled slabs of clay will be provided to each student, as well as all necessary tools. After the demo, we will take some time to sketch out ideas and turn those sketches into stencils. The rest of the class time will be spent on building your mug.
Week two: Now that we have our canvases (i.e. mugs) built, it's time to think about painting! This workshop will begin with a painting demo, where you will have time to practice some ideas using gouache, which has a similar consistency to ceramic underglazes.
When ready, you will translate what you've practised onto their mug. All mugs will be fired and glazed by the instructors outside of workshop hours; you will be notified when your items are ready for pickup.
At the end of this course, you will walk away with an understanding of slab building, painting on clay, and one to two beautiful handmade mugs ready for your morning coffee!
This ceramics course is a great way to get your foot in the door with a new hobby. Learn the basics and leave with a beautiful handmade item and the inspiration and motivation to pursue more!

I’m Lauren, a Portland, OR-based artist working primarily in clay.
I took my first pottery class in 2018 during my graduate program in applied physics. I used to joke that I felt more like an engineer in the pottery studio than at my job as an actual engineer - I loved working with my hands, and designing new work, from ideation to troubleshooting to the final product.
All of my work is slab-built, a hand-building technique that does not require a wheel, and instead starts with slabs of clay that are cut, folded, and formed to create different shapes. These functional forms, like mugs and vases, then serve as a canvas for adding hand-painted patterns and illustrations.
