What you'll do

Explore watercolor painting in this online course perfect for beginners! Unlike acrylics or oils, watercolor paints have a mind of their own - rich and juicy, yet unpredictable and hard to control. But learn a few tricks, and they'll do most of the work for you. You'll study exactly how to get the luminous, transparent colors and effects that only watercolor can provide.

No special artistic or drawing skill is necessary. Your instructor will take you through all of the basic techniques so even total beginners can feel comfortable and confident in class.

Anyone, including you, can learn to do it - all it takes is practice and persistence. If you've never painted before and suspect you "have no artistic talent" or if you've tried watercolor but "just made a big mess, " this is the class for you!

You'll learn exactly how to begin, how to avoid common mistakes, and how to create appealing paintings:

Knowledge required

No painting, drawing, or other art experience necessary - seriously. If you can hold a pencil well enough to write your name, you can hold a brush well enough to paint.

What to bring

If you take the class on Zoom or do not order a kit, you'll need 100% cotton watercolor paper, brushes, and tube paints that have been squeezed into a palette and allowed to dry for 24 hours. Your teacher will send a complete supplies list after booking. Those attending in person can order a complete Materials Kit for $65 after signing up.

After a career as a non-fiction writer/journalist and travel photographer, I took up watercolor on a lark -- and soon became pleasantly obsessed with it.
Unfortunately, the two classes I took (both with professional artists) never covered the basics of working with watercolor, and left me confused and frustrated. As I taught myself from books (in the Jurassic era, before Youtube), I began to put together the course I wish I'd been able to take -- this course, Watercolor for Absolute Beginners.
