Meet the Crafty Kit

By Kiana Pontrelli

For Katherine Tozduman, crafting was more than just a hobby—it was a breath of fresh air and a creative outlet. For years she worked in the corporate world, but always felt like something was missing. After using craft to reconnect with her ailing father and find positivity in hard times, she discovered exactly what her life was missing.

With a newfound passion for fostering connection and inspiring others to find their own creative space, Katherine founded The Crafty Kit. From chunky knit blankets to terrarium workshops, Katherine and her team teach crafty classes virtually across the US and from her in-person studio in Westwood, New Jersey. The Crafty Kit specializes in beautifully packed craft kits delivered straight to your door, making it easy for first-timers and convenient for anyone across the US looking to enjoy a creative break.

No matter your motive for crafting, Katherine’s workshops can offer you the chance to find your own creative breather. She and her team create a positive and supportive environment where you can explore one of the latest craft trends, such as resin art, or simply wind down with a relaxing DIY project, such as a wine glass painting class.

I turned my hobby into a business by…

“Incorporating my skills as a merchant into my new self-taught crafting hobby and turning it into a business. My expertise in sourcing, passion to drive new collections, and thinking of the next evolution of crafts have helped me evolve our business to the next level.”

Crafting is a mood booster…

“When I was working eight or more hours per day in corporate, I noticed that one of the biggest mood improvers for me was remembering to take breaks and make space for additional creative outlets to feel refreshed.”

Why you should try terrarium making…

Terrarium workshops are one of my favorites as they help me build the confidence of my students to give plants a second chance. The stillness, care, and connection with nature help us look at life from a different perspective. Sometimes when we least expect it a plant can go through its rebirth just like we do as humans.”

I love helping others tap into their creativity…

The Crafty Kit instructor, Katherine waves at her computer screen with a virtual workshop for her craft class.

“Each session taught brings us joy and we walk away fulfilled by those we met during our session. Sometimes we don’t even want our classes to end but we also get so excited when we see our clients come back for a different craft.”

Crafting with others inspires me…

“Building connection and creativity within is what drives my motivation to teach. I leave each class inspired by my students as I know our time shared will be forever remembered whether it is from our conversations, laughs, or craft built together. I believe in meeting people for a reason and sometimes that can involve shedding a tear here and there but it's totally worth it.”
