If you're curious about pottery making and want a more in-depth course on the process from beginning to end, with more practice time, then this NYC ceramics course is for you. It's a chance for complete beginners to try their hand at the potter's wheel, with no experience necessary, but they will graduate from the class with a beginner-level understanding of the clay material and art form.
In this pottery class, you will meet for six consecutive weeks. During the first class, you will learn the basics of wheel throwing, including how to make simple forms on the pottery wheel. Then, your instructor will guide you as you try it yourself. You'll be able to try and try again until you get a piece (or more) that you like.
During weeks two to four, you will have the opportunity to continue honing your skills on the wheel. Coning, centering, pulling walls, as well as shaping pottery and attaching handles, will be discussed and demonstrated.
In week five, we will trim the works from the course that are your favorites by turning them upside down on the potter's wheel. You will also be able to sponge your works to a smooth finish and further refine and decorate.
On the last class, you will learn glazing, which is how you decorate and add color to your pottery by painting or dipping in a liquid glass suspension. Various colors and surfaces are possible. The works that you create will be ready to be picked up one week after the last class.
This class is great for those who want to experience clay and have their hand in every part of the process from start to finish, allowing the student to be exposed to all the stages of firing and finishing.
If you're interested in learning a new and fun hobby, pottery will allow you to dig your hands into clay, unwind, and create unique handmade ceramic goods!
This class series runs over 6 consecutive sessions, at the same time every week.
