Wood Thumb is the vision of two brothers, Christopher and David Steinrueck. They set out to build a creative community that embodies craftsmanship and sustainability. It’s really a company of ongoing experiments.

From selling products to teaching workshops, we’ve achieved what we believe is the perfect blend of entrepreneurial makers and designers. Add a kick of cowboy innovation and you’ll understand who we are.

Our Community
We started out in 2011 making small batches of wood products and selling them to stores around the country. The products were successful, but after a while, we felt as though there was something missing. We thought long and hard about the purpose of Wood Thumb and realized our goal was to get as many people passionate about woodworking as possible. Begin the workshop era.

Wood Thumb believes that anyone and everyone should experience the satisfaction of woodworking. We’ve turned our focus to creating a community centered around craftsmanship and creativity. We’d love to have you come to a workshop or stop by sometime to say hey.

Chris was super friendly and laid back. The shop is nice, though not the nicest walk to get to. Our whole group very much enjoyed making our cutting boards and we ended up with really nice pieces in the end. I think we could have done more in the three hours, so a tad more complexity would have been nice.

This is a really fun date night idea -- interactive, shared experience, you get plenty of room during the class to chat as you sand down your board, and at the end you get a beautiful piece of craft you'd actually keep and use in your home. And Chris our teacher was awesome -- clear explanations, really knowledgeable, and patient with our questions. Would definitely look for another class again!

Learned some basics of working with wood, as well as using a chop saw, a router, and a nail gun, to make a pretty cool wedge table. Chris was an excellent, hands-on instructor who's knowledgeable and passionate about his craft, and Wood Thumb's workshop space is clean, well-organized, and safe. Highly recommend this class to anyone interested in dipping their toes in woodworking!

Chris was great, so nice and instructive! Our team had a lot of fun. You can bring your drinks and enjoy for the finishing part. Just know that the neighborhood area can get a little sketchy so show up on time instead of early.

The teacher was amazing! He made such a welcoming and comfortable environment for beginners. I had never done woodworking and came away with a beautiful cutting board. He even had vegan cutting board oil that didn’t have beeswax to accommodate me and my boyfriend. I will definitely be coming back to this workshop!

The Class with Wood Thumb was great! The venue is really cool and well set up. The instructor/owner Chris has a relaxed teaching style and you can tell he's done it a thousand times. The class prepped in a way that you learn some basic wood-working elements, but you complete the project in one session---something to keep in mind to plan to take your project home with you that day. Highly recommend, will definitely explore more classes with Wood Thumb.

The class was fantastic! You get to build your cutting board from scratch and the end result is something you’ll look forward to using or gifting to someone else. Chris the instructor is very passion and kind. I told him my name once and he remembered it till the very end. If you are looking for an art class in SF, look no further.

This wood working class was amazing! Our teacher was so knowledgeable, helped us build confidence with machinery, and provided everything we needed! There was a perfect amount of time for us to work together (sharing the machines/discussing which materials to use) but also on our own time to just be present and focus on the beautiful task at hand! Great for new and experienced individuals. Great price and value for everything, would definitely recommend!

Amazing class, with a very knowledgeable teacher who actually owns the workshop. The class lasts for 2.5 to 3h and takes place in the professional workshop used for producing furnitures. The class is really well designed, we got to cut wood, shape it, assemble/joint all the pieces together, and take home something we built ourselves. Highly recommend for 1 person activity/date or even group/team building!

Super fun! Chris was thorough, approachable, and engaging. The class is designed so it's not intimidating and everyone is set up for success.
