Neriage Wheel Throwing Class

Learn the Japanese art of using colored clay in this NYC pottery class.

2 hours Class size 1 to 20     label $96 - $105 (price varies across dates)

If you're curious about pottery making and want a crash course on the basics, give this NYC class a go! It's a chance for complete beginners to try their hand at the potter's wheel and experience Japanese neriage - a gorgeous technique resulting in swirled, different-colored clay.

In this pottery class, you will be shown the basics via a short demonstration of how to make a cup or bowl shape on the pottery wheel. Then, you'll be guided along as you try it yourself. The spin? The clay you use will be Japanese neriage colored clay. The end result will be a stunning combination of marbled streaks, that are totally random.

Class time includes intros, demonstration, working time, and clean up time for the last fifteen minutes.

Whether you're looking for date night ideas, team building activities, or just something fun to try this weekend in NYC, this class is a great option. Come sink your hands into some clay and make a piece of glazed pottery that you'll be sure to treasure!

This class includes one fired piece per person to be picked up in one week.

Our group of 8 (6 adults and 2 teens -- all beginners) had a wonderful time! The teachers were so helpful, fun and encouraging. This was a birthday outing and was a great success Highly recommend.

Teacher was super helpful, really a very fun class! Class was small enough to get all the help needed! No experience necessary!

Bonnie Chan Sep 2023

Pete was great, he went through the process step by step and was available for questions throughout the class. The venue was clean and prepared for us upon arrival. All materials were provided. The class should be a bit longer, maybe 2.5 hours instead of 2 hours as time went by quickly and we didn't take as much practical time as we'd like.

Pete was a great teacher! My friend and I had a lot of fun. The only disappointment was at the end, we didn’t know we could only choose one piece to have finished. I would have focused on one piece for the class if I knew. Otherwise , we had a wonderful experience.

We really enjoyed the class and had a fun time. It would have been even better if the instructors were able to check in a bit more on each student.

Wish we had more time but it was very fun. I really appreciate how they break down the process and talked about the little things that makes a big difference. I've done wheeling throwing a few times in the past, and every time when something went wrong, people typically forgot the steps and just panicked. At Pottery NYC, they visualize the steps so if something is not going well, I could just remind myself which step I'm at, and what I should be doing. You'd be impressed how much that helps! Oh and Neriage is just beyond beautiful! Can't wait to get my piece back!

The studio was bright with natural light. Our instructor Pedro gave a very detailed and knowledgeable demonstration of the different steps involved in throwing on the wheel! He also had 2 staff members on-site to assist with any questions, so the pro-to-student ratio was 1:2 which was great! We are given the opportunity to create 3 pieces with beautiful colored clay and would fire our favorite piece in the end. Their team would help with final touches that include glazing and fine clean-up. Looking forward to receiving our piece!

Fun class the teacher was great. Patient, kind and very generous in allowing us to try and try again!

Dennis Hamed Apr 2023

Our instructor gave us a demo, explained the main process of making pottery, and gave us as many attempts as we wanted to create a piece to take home. He was very encouraging along the way, helped us when we were stuck, and was there to answer any questions. It was a fun and congenial atmosphere. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who either has never tried Neriage or has some experience with wheel throwing and would like to explore this particular method of making pottery. I came with my girlfriend and we both enjoyed it thoroughly.

Great class! The instructor gave the perfect amount of a walkthrough at the beginning and majority of the time was dedicated to hands-on learning. The color clay was cool and I can’t wait to pick up my fired piece in a week.
