You Don't Need to Be an Artist to Create a Custom Bearbrick

By Kiana Pontrelli

Bear figurines have infiltrated art galleries, home decor, and maybe even your local craft store, but why they are so special? They’re actually called Be@rbricks, and we’ll tell you how these adorable figurines went from coveted collector items to the latest DIY trend and why you’ll want one too!

What are Bearbricks?

Be@rbricks are bear figurines that come in a range of designs and materials. These Japanese toys were created by Medicom in 2001. But it’s not just any kind of kid’s toy, they are released as limited edition collectibles that sell like fine art, some reaching $15,000 price tags and sold in blue chip galleries. Currently, there are 47 series of the Be@rbrick, each with its own army of unique designs.

These bears were not only highly sought after by collectors but also by artists all over the spectrum pining for collaborations from Chanel to Star Wars. Over twenty years later, we’re still talking about bearbricks, they became a medium of artistic expression and it’s no surprise that people wanted to customize their own.

From art to DIY

In early 2022, people started buying blank bearbricks (not manufactured by Medicom) to customize. Part of the bearbrick appeal for collectors was their exclusivity, but DIY bears opened the trend to a wider audience.

The most popular form of DIY incorporates fluid art. To make a fluid art bear, you pour acrylic paint onto a surface to create a colorful marbled pattern. Because of their 3D form, it can be a challenge to print or even draw a design on them, without any artistic experience. Fluid art allows for easy application. You also don’t need artistic skills to achieve impressive results with this medium. If you can pick your favorite colors and pour, you can participate! Whether you’re a collector or a DIY-er, it’s clear that both forms of bearbricks have a special place in the hearts of art lovers.

If you want to give it a go, it’s as easy as purchasing a DIY bear kit online or joining a fluid art bear workshop. Rather than having one ready-made, you can create a totally unique bear. This trend proves that you don’t need to be an artist to have a custom bearbrick.

It’s not just a trendy item to own, you can also reap the positive benefits of exploring your creativity! Fluid art bear classes provide a fun and creative environment, whether you’re looking for a fun date idea or want to throw a paint party for your next corporate event. It’s an easy and casual activity making it great for any group or occasion. Joining a workshop also allows you to choose from a wide range of colors and receive personalized guidance from a friendly instructor. Leave the mess at the studio and take home a work of art!
