Julia Godoy Studio

I am a Brazilian artist based in Los Angeles, California and I work with handmade pigment and paint made from foraged natural materials. I collects bones, ash, plants, minerals, and insects from my direct surroundings and process them into pigment by hand using a mortar and pestle. Working with natural materials allows me to connect physical land to intangible memory, as my work is personal is centered around my experiences as an immigrant living in the United States. I began my pigment making journey during the pandemic while studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Met with isolation and restricted access to art materials, I began to source minerals and old buried bricks during my walks in nature. Now, handmade pigment has completely taken over my life! I am here to share the importance of connecting to nature in a creative way.
