Embark on a creative journey with a ceramics sculpture series in San Francisco. Led by our talented instructor, Mareiwa, this series is perfect for beginners and aspiring handbuilders and sculptors eager to enhance their skills or build confidence in clay.

Throughout the workshop, you'll delve into the essentials of handbuilding and sculpting, mastering techniques in coil building, pinching, and slab construction. Mareiwa will provide expert guidance, creating a personalized and supportive learning environment for all participants.

Sculpting Adventures in Clay:

  • Week 1: Sculpt and shape using the pinching and coiling method to create your first sculpture of the class series.
  • Week 2: Dive deeper into sculpting as you discover the art of slab building, and master the use of the slab roller for future projects during open studio hours.
  • Week 3: Unleash your creativity and combine various techniques during this open project time, where the instructor will assist each student.
  • Week 4: Learn about glaze and underglaze and then apply those glazing techniques to all of your sculptural pieces.

Whether you're seeking a new hobby or rekindling an old passion, this class is perfect for individuals of all skill levels. Studio Sumi is a community of like-minded creatives, and our collective goal is to unwind in a friendly pottery studio and discover the joy of working with clay.


Knowledge required
Open to all levels! This workshop is great for those who have never touched clay and for those who are just exploring the world of ceramics.
 
What you'll get
  • Structured Learning: Engage in 2.5 hours of weekly in-person instruction over four weeks, covering foundational handbuilding and sculpting techniques.
  • Open Studio Hours: Practice your newfound skills at your own pace during dedicated studio hours outside of class time. Studio hours are daily from 11am-7pm Monday-Sunday and with full-day access on class days (6am-midnight).
  • Comprehensive Materials: Your course includes all the necessary materials, providing a hassle-free experience including 15 lbs of either white stoneware clay or brown speckled buff clay, studio glazes, firing of all pieces, access to studio machinery and equipment, and personal shelf space.

The studio is a block away from Bus 38 and 38R, two blocks away from Bus 1. There is also ample metered parking and some free street parking along 14th Ave.

As a conceptual artist, she imbues her creations with depth and meaning, channeling her artistic vision through her brand, Mamonas. Ceramics serve as the cornerstone of her practice, weaving seamlessly into her artistic journey. Over the years, Mareiwa has dedicated herself to both creating and teaching within the ceramic arts community, inspiring children and adults alike through workshops and sharing her boundless enthusiasm for the medium's versatility.

Sumiware Ceramics is a San Francisco-based pottery brand by Bri Santo. Studio Sumi is her new pottery studio in SF where she offers workshops and other creative classes.

While growing up, Bri was surrounded by pottery and was encouraged to dabble in all forms of art. She first dug into clay at her mother's pottery studio when she was little. Since then she had always incorporated art and ceramics into her daily life, even when she was an elementary school teacher.
