What you'll do
Explore all the possibilities of working with encaustic paint and ink in this encaustic painting class in Walnut Creek! Connect with your inner artist to create up to three new paintings!
Pigment-based inks are safe and fun to use with the encaustic medium. In this class, Melissa Stephens will teach you techniques with inks as a base layer and as a way to create patterns, lines and other designs within the encaustic layers.
You'll also explore alcohol inks. Learn how to spray, dab and move the ink across your painting to create amazing patterns and layers of color. Alcohol and India ink's fast drying time allows students to work quickly and easily learn while painting.
There will be plenty of time to explore how the ink can be manipulated through dilution, used as an expressive texture tool, or by scraping and fusing. Find out how inks add a special look with the addition of mottled spray and blown out edges. No previous art experience is necessary to join this workshop!

This is a beginner friendly class. No previous art experience necessary. 18+ only.

Your teacher
Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, I received my BA from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and continue my arts education though workshops and specialized instruction. Currently living in Walnut Creek, CA, I am an encaustic painting instructor, working artist and advocate for the arts. In 2020, I co-developed a virtual gallery and developed a YouTube channel called The Encaustic Edge. I also started a business coaching artists, at all levels in their careers. I serve on several art boards, volunteer at galleries in the San Francisco Bay area, and host live and virtual encaustic demonstrations.
Encaustic is an ancient artform that originates with the Greeks and Egyptians. Layers of molten beeswax and a blow torch are my idea of a good time!
Through the years, I have discovered how fulfilling it is to teach the art I love to make. It is my pleasure to feed people’s creative appetites, give them new knowledge and share ideas. My artwork has been exhibited in Turkey, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, Washington, New York, and California, and I have collectors around the globe.
