What you'll do
Create unique art with texture in this hands-on encaustic painting class in Walnut Creek! Stencils are a great way to add texture and recognizable imagery to your artwork. In this workshop, you will learn how to properly use and create your own stencils. You'll be amazed by the cool design possibilities when masking shapes with tape or recycled materials.
Melissa Stephens will guide you step-by-step on how to cut out your own original stencil and you will have access to Melissa's abundant pre-made stencil collection.
There is no limit to your imagination when adding colorful stencils to your encaustic paintings. The media possibilities are endless as well with encaustic paint, pastels and pigment sticks, to name a few! You'll create up to three handmade paintings!
Don't worry if you've never tried this type of painting before, this class requires no prior experience! This class is full of information and hands-on instruction but also includes time for experimentation and exploration. You will quickly realize the incredible effects of layering multiple stencils while exploring color, shape, and pattern.
Knowledge required
Beginner friendly class! All are welcome. Must be 18(+) years.

Your teacher
Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, I received my BA from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and continue my arts education though workshops and specialized instruction. Currently living in Walnut Creek, CA, I am an encaustic painting instructor, working artist and advocate for the arts. In 2020, I co-developed a virtual gallery and developed a YouTube channel called The Encaustic Edge. I also started a business coaching artists, at all levels in their careers. I serve on several art boards, volunteer at galleries in the San Francisco Bay area, and host live and virtual encaustic demonstrations.
Encaustic is an ancient artform that originates with the Greeks and Egyptians. Layers of molten beeswax and a blow torch are my idea of a good time!
Through the years, I have discovered how fulfilling it is to teach the art I love to make. It is my pleasure to feed people’s creative appetites, give them new knowledge and share ideas. My artwork has been exhibited in Turkey, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, Washington, New York, and California, and I have collectors around the globe.
