If you're serious about learning how to make pottery, give this NYC pottery course a go! This eight-week class is the chance for complete beginners to go from knowing nothing, to being able to make work they love. This is a colored clay class, sometimes referred to as Japanese neriage - a gorgeous technique resulting in swirled, different-colored clay.

In this pottery course, you will meet once a week for eight consecutive weeks.

What you'll learn

  • Class one: You look at samples of color and be given a kit with four colors, these we will use to learn how to stain white clay into the primary colors. This clay will be saved for you to work with during the remainder of the course and you will each get your own shelf. There is no actual wheel time during the first class.
  • Class two: You will learn how to use the pottery wheel and get to make several pieces during class, these will be stored to keep them moist.
  • Class three: You will learn how to trim your works and to "reveal" the color beneath the surface as well as augment shape and weight of works. You will also learn carving and stamping techniques.
  • Class four: You will dive deeper into color theory, such as making secondary colors like purple and orange. You will learn how to make nerikomi stripes and use them on or off wheel pieces.
  • Class five: You will learn how to continue to hone skills and refine the wheel throwing process.
  • Class six: You will learn how to make a checkerboard pattern and stipple with colored clay to create an intentional design on the surface with bits of clay.
  • Class seven: You will focus on trimming, finishing, smoothing, carving, painting, and moving works through to be fired for the final class.
  • Class eight: You spend all of your time glazing, as all works must be completed by the termination of the class. All finished glazed works can be picked up one week from this date.

Whether you're looking for a new hobby, or just to try something new in NYC, this class is a great option. Come sink your hands into some clay and make a collection of glazed pottery that you'll be sure to treasure!
