6 x 2 hours Class size 10     label $450

This class is an introduction for the Nerikomi ceramic hand-making process from start to finish and takes place over six consecutive sessions.

Week One:

Students will be given stains and clay to mix together to produce various colors. Percentages and dilutions, as well as making secondary and custom colors and tints, will be discussed. All of class one is dedicated to mixing clays, no work is produced.

Week Two:

Geometric shapes. Stripe and checker pattern: We will make slabs with patterns that can be formed into various objects like cups and bowls.

Week Three:

Organic shapes: How to design and execute anything organic by breaking down its shapes and putting them together and then cutting. A butterfly or flower with outlines will be shown.

Week Four:

Trimming, smoothing, sanding, and finishing works to be fired. Clarity of the pattern is achievable at this stage.

Week Five:

Glazing works, clear, Nerikomi “stain”, naked, as well as colorful but translucent glazes will be discussed.
Pseudo Kintsugi - patch up any cracks and prepare to use gold next week.

Week Six:

Works will emerge out of the kiln ready to take home. Lusters such as silver, gold and the popular mother of pearl will be applied and any kintsugi repairs will be gilded.

Typically, students can expect to make between 1 and 4 pieces and pick up their finished glazed works one week after class. Open studio is available at an additional cost.
